What is Digital Signature?

A Digital Signature is also equivalently referred to as a "Digital Signature Certificate" or a "DSC" or a "Digital Certificate" or an "Electronic Signature". All these terms practically mean one and the same thing. The digital signature is equivalent of a handwritten signature or stamped seal, but offering far more inherent security.

What are the different types of Digital Signature Certificates ?

  1. Class1 DSC: Class 1 Digital Signature certificates shall be issued to individuals/private subscribers. These certificates will confirm that users name and E-mail address form an unambiguous subject within the Certifying Authorities database.
  2. Class2 DSC: These Digital Signature certificates will be issued for both business personnel and private individuals use. This is primarily used by Chartered Accountants or Company Secretary for their clients, for himself, for existing directors, for new company incorporation, for incorporation of Limited Liability Partnership, for practicing CA or CS or ICWA.
  3. Class3 DSC: This Digital Signature certificate will be issued to individuals as well as organizations. As these are high assurance certificates, primarily intended for ecommerce applications, they shall be issued to individuals only on their personal (physical) appearance before the Certifying Authorities.
